Rolling Stone Magazine places this Hotel California song over the 49th most popular rock song.
The song's guitar solo is ranked 8th on Guitar Magazine's Top 100 Guitar Solos.
According to the composers the song tells about a hotel that you can check out anytime you want but you can't actually leave it. It is an allegory of American's excesses that they can stop it for now but you will still try it the same and has the difficulty of leaving it.
"It's basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about."
Don Henley's qoute --- "I'm not scary; I'm just opinionated."
In other words, Eagles is preaching about America's excesses of materialism and self worship. This is how the nation had been suffering and there is no longer such a thing as a pretty American Dream. It is a nightmare.
This slow rock song is a real classic.

Pretty classic and really outstanding. Some think that the story of the song is pretty clear. The message is around drug use and being drunk.
